As a candidate for mayor of Jersey City, Jim has significant experience in government, a demonstrated commitment to public service, and a strong desire to improve the City he calls home for his fellow residents. A History in and Commitment to Jersey City

Jersey City has long been home to the McGreevey family. Jim’s grandparents came

through Ellis Island from Ireland and built a life for their family in Jersey City. They came to America to fulfill their hopes and dreams, and Jersey City was a new beginning for them.

Jim’s grandfather, Michael McGreevey, was a member of the old 4 th Precinct of the

Jersey City Police Department. Jim’s mother, who grew up on Clerk Street in Greenville, became a nurse working at the Jersey City Medical Center, and his father, from Lafayette Street, served at Jersey Railroad, then the Marine Corps, then the trucking industry.

Jim was born in Jersey City. Since developing and heading the New Jersey Reentry

Corporation (NJRC), Jim has lived in Jersey City. Witnessing the significant changes

and renaissance of Jersey City in the past few years, Jim knows that there are significant challenges that must be addressed. Given his experience both in and outside

government, Jim is ideally suited for City Hall.

A Rich Legacy of Public Service

Having served as New Jersey's Governor, State Senator, and State Assemblyman, and

with over a decade of leadership as the Mayor of Woodbridge—one of New Jersey's

largest municipalities—Jim has significant experience and knowledge to bring to his

mayor candidacy. His tenure in various capacities, including roles within Merck and

Company, the NJ State Parole Board, and the Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office,

showcases a multifaceted career dedicated to public welfare and justice.

Champion of Second Chances

As the Executive Director of the New Jersey Reentry Corporation (NJRC), Jim’s has

been a vanguard for change by developing a non-profit organization that provides

critically needed services to those returning from prison, jail, addiction treatment, and

combat. Under his leadership, NJRC has grown tremendously, with ten sites across New Jersey—including Jersey City—offering comprehensive services that range from addiction treatment and sober housing to employment training and healthcare linkage.

The success stories woven through the NJRC's initiatives, highlighted by a recidivism rate of just 19.7 percent and an annual employment rate of 62 percent, underscore Jim’s commitment to rehabilitation and societal reintegration.

A Journey of Service

After leaving the Governor’s Office, Jim entered seminary, where he conducted fieldwork with Exodus Transitional Ministry in Harlem. There, Jim learned the importance and need to serve those individuals in our society who are most in need, reflecting upon his deeply held belief in redemption and faith-based community service.

Whether counseling women at the Integrity House Program in Hudson County Correctional Center or providing pastoral care at the Cabrini hospice, Jim has consistently demonstrated his dedication to healing and supporting the marginalized.

Educational Foundations

A Columbia College alumnus, he furthered his education with a law degree from

Georgetown University, a Master’s of Education from Harvard University, and a Master’s of Divinity from the General Theological Seminary. These diverse educational pursuits have equipped Jim with a perspective on how to lead effectively, serve those whom he leads, and address the most pressing problems that today’s society faces.
