Jersey City’s public transit must meet residents’ needs. With less than half owning cars, reliable transit is a lifeline for work, school, and appointments—especially for seniors. Unreliable service means missed opportunities. As Mayor, I’ll prioritize a well-designed, connected system, leading over state agencies to address our city’s challenges.
Reimagining Journal Square as a true transit hub can make transportation seamless, connecting all of Jersey City. Improved transit will streamline commutes, meet basic needs, support local businesses, and unite neighborhoods.
Jersey City needs Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) on JFK Boulevard to reduce congestion and improve reliability. BRT will offer faster travel, modern shelters, real-time updates, and traffic signal priority, benefiting riders, businesses, and emergency services while uniting communities.
The Route 440 Light Rail Extension, connecting West Side Avenue to a new terminal, will enhance transit access to 35% affordable housing at Bayfront. I will collaborate with NJ TRANSIT and Hudson County to prioritize construction, driving sustainable development in Jersey City.
PATH is a key existing asset for Jersey City's transportation system, helping to solidify Journal Square as Hudson County's central hub for regional connectivity, transportation, jobs, and economic growth. The plan aims to improve PATH frequency, capacity, and signal upgrades, especially in Journal Square, by partnering with the Port Authority. A priority will be a reduction in wait times during peak and weekends along with direct service without having to bypass through Hoboken.
Jersey City's streets, plagued by potholes, poor utility patching, and litter, will see major improvements through a Smart Repair Program. This includes full-street repavement after utility work, physical utility tags for accountability, and bus-mounted cameras to prioritize repairs. Regular road cleaning, enhanced public spaces with better lighting and sidewalks, and a new Transportation Department (JCDOT) will streamline efforts. A revitalized Parking Authority will reinvest parking revenues into road and transit upgrades, including municipal garages, while supporting the replacement of the Newark Bay Bridge for safer, reliable transportation.
Jersey City’s fragmented road maintenance system causes delays and confusion, requiring a dedicated Transportation Department to streamline operations and enhance accountability. This department will proactively engage residents, local groups, and businesses to ensure transparent, efficient solutions that build trust and improve mobility.
Jersey City’s Smart Repair Program will use technology, like cameras on buses, to proactively identify and prioritize pothole and road repairs, improving efficiency and reducing vehicle damage. The program includes rapid response crews for utility repairs and visible tags at job sites to enhance accountability and resident trust.
I support replacing the aging Newark Bay Bridge, a critical link for commuters and the economy, by starting construction within the U.S. Coast Guard’s five-year permit window to avoid ongoing repairs and risks. The project must involve local input, prioritize environmental considerations, and pause additional turnpike expansion plans until the bridge’s benefits are assessed.
Jersey City’s parking is imbalanced, with overcrowded commercial areas and underused residential streets, as a 2020 study found, wasting land near transit hubs. I will re-establish a Parking Authority with bonding power to enforce parking rules and reinvest revenue into sidewalks, transit, and safer streets, following successful models like Austin and Old Pasadena.
Jersey City’s Vision Zero plan aims to eliminate traffic deaths and injuries through improved street design, safer crosswalks, and stricter traffic law enforcement. Speed cameras near schools, traffic control to reduce Holland Tunnel cut-throughs, and a dedicated JCPD Traffic Bureau with Motorcycle and Bicycle Units will enhance safety. Upgraded public spaces with better lighting, wider sidewalks, and improved pedestrian access in business districts will create a safer, more welcoming environment for all.
Jersey City’s Vision Zero Action Plan, launched in 2019, has reduced traffic injuries and deaths by 29% through measures like speed humps, protected bike lanes, and curb extensions, achieving zero road deaths in 2022. As Mayor, I will continue implementing traffic-calming improvements and use data and community feedback to enhance street safety for all.
Speeding near Jersey City’s 39 public schools, endangering nearly 27,000 students, demands urgent action. I will collaborate with the State Legislature to implement automated speed enforcement cameras in school zones, proven to reduce speeding by up to 63%, and expand traffic cameras at intersections to prevent dangerous driving and protect children.
Holland Tunnel traffic should not disrupt Jersey City’s neighborhoods, where residents live and children play. As Mayor, I will collaborate with state agencies to manage signal timing, deploy traffic auxiliaries, and redirect tunnel-bound traffic to protect local streets and ensure community safety.
Jersey City needs a dedicated Traffic Bureau within the Police Department, including motorcycle and bicycle units, to enforce traffic laws, manage congestion, and enhance safety for cyclists, pedestrians, and all road users. This bureau will coordinate with Public Works to clear roads swiftly during incidents, ensuring efficient movement for emergency services and buses during rush hours or emergencies.
I'm committed to enhancing micromobility by creating a safe, continuous bike lane network integrated through streets, parks, and commercial areas, including a Hudson River Waterfront Bike Loop, while expanding Citi Bike access and secure bike parking in business districts and transit hubs. A dedicated JCPD Bicycle Unit will enforce traffic laws, address reckless driving, and promote road safety education, ensuring cyclists and scooter users travel safely, supporting inclusive and environmentally friendly transportation.
I will collaborate with the community to create a Hudson River Waterfront Bike Loop, a safe, scenic route integrated with Jersey City’s bike lane system for car-free travel. This loop will enhance daily commuting and recreation while preserving welcoming public spaces for walking and relaxation.
To make cycling a practical daily option, Jersey City needs safer bike parking with theft-resistant racks in business districts, near transit stations, and retail areas. Enhanced lighting, increased traffic enforcement, and a well-connected bike network will support this goal.
As Jersey City grows, I will proactively secure federal and state infrastructure funding from sources like the FTA, FHWA, and New Jersey Transportation Trust Fund to ensure robust transit and services. My administration will advocate strongly in Trenton and Washington to bring resources for safer streets, better transit, and resilient infrastructure.
Allocate a percentage of Parking Authority revenue to public transit improvements.
Use those funds to modernize public transit, expand micromobility, and improve roads without overburdening taxpayers.
Fight for Jersey City's fair share of state and federal transit and infrastructure dollars.
